Lethargy

A cow with milk fever has no appetite and is relatively inactive; its ears are often cold. Due to the shortage of calcium in its blood, the skeletal muscles in particular no longer function properly. This can lead to the cow being unable to get up. The muscles in the various organs too, such as the womb, the rumen, the heart and the intestines, no longer function properly. The cow no longer produces faecal waste or urine. Bloat may occur, because ruminal movements stop. A number of cows suffering from milk fever – some 8 per cent – die of the disease. It is thus important that a cow has a sufficient appetite and that the rumen function is optimal.
